House Safe Climate Caucus Welcomes Congressman DeSaulnier and Congressman Lieu to its membership

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The US House of Representatives Safe Climate Caucus announced today that US Congressmen Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) and Ted Lieu (CA-33) have joined the 41-Member Caucus which works to educate other Members of Congress and the public about the science of climate change.  The Caucus is also working to bring up legislative solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote resiliency.

Before being elected to Congress, Rep. Lieu and Rep. DeSaulnier both worked extensively on climate change issues in the California State Assembly and Senate.

Rep. DeSaulnier was a member of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) from 1998-2006.   In the California Senate he co-authored numerous clean air and clean energy bills.  He was also a member of the CA Senate Select Committee on Climate Change and AB 32 Implementation.

Rep. DeSaulnier pointed to his past efforts in California to increase environmental protection and reduce greenhouse gas emissions as a key reason for joining the Safe Climate Caucus. “California has implemented the toughest environmental standards in the nation. While in the California State Senate, I worked hard to oversee the implementation of AB 32, the landmark climate change law that requires the state to reduce greenhouse gas emission to 1990 levels by 2020. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House Safe Climate Caucus to address the global threat of climate change for future generations,” Rep. DeSaulnier said.

Rep. Lieu has taken over retired Congressman Henry Waxman’s position as California’s 33rd district Representative.  In his time in the California State Assembly and Senate, Mr. Lieu introduced legislation to curb climate change and encourage clean fuel technologies.  He coauthored AB 32 and was named an “Environmental Champion” by Environment California.

“In Congress we deal with thousands of issues.  But there is only one that can kill humanity as a species: climate change.  In California, I was honored to coauthor AB 32, the global warming solutions act.  But it’s clear to me that to solve climate change, we need America to do what California has done, and then for America to get other countries to do what California has done.   I am proud to join the Safe Climate Caucus and work with them to combat climate change and champion legislation to reduce carbon pollution,” Rep. Lieu said.

Congressman Alan Lowenthal, chair of the Safe Climate Caucus, welcomed Rep. DeSaulnier and Rep. Lieu to the Caucus: “Congressman DeSaulnier, Congressman Lieu, and I worked closely in the California Senate and Assembly to support environmental causes and bring up legislation to promote clean air, clean energy, and clean technology.  I am excited they have joined the Safe Climate Caucus and I look forward to partnering with them to bring about national solutions for climate change.”

The House Safe Climate Caucus was formed in 2009 to raise awareness both within Congress and with the public about the many ways climate change is affecting the world. For speeches, videos, and opinion articles please check out the Safe Climate Caucus  YouTube channel and Huffington Post page.
